Onomatopoeia
Personal Project
Tokyo, Japan, September 2022
Onomatopoeia is a self-initiated project created during an artist residency in Japan in September 2022. The project is part of my ongoing exploration into the intricacies of language and the untranslatable; themes that recur throughout my practice. Ten original illustrations form a body of work that focuses on a distinctive feature of the Japanese language – Japanese Onomatopoeia – which describes sounds, movements and feelings that are often difficult to put into the words of another language. My illustrations visually translate these concepts into imagery, allowing non-Japanese speakers to better appreciate this varied and beautifully nuanced language.
Each piece illustrates a different Onomatopoeia along with the situation I’ve experienced it in.
All works are screen-printed by Private Press and VaryLab in limited editions of ten.
The prints are exhibited at tokyobike London from April 19th to May 26th 2023.
